The Compton Pronouncing English as a Second Language Program was developed by Dr. Arthur J. Compton, a speech-pathology researcher and clinician, beginning in the 1970’s. He was a specialist in children’s phonological disorders when he was approached by two graduate students for help in reducing their foreign accents. He discovered that few accent reduction materials existed at the time, and started to develop his own exercise books and practice tapes.
In the 1980’s Dr. Compton, through his Institute of Language & Phonology, located in San Francisco, began doing specialized training exclusively for speech pathologists, who had the necessary expertise in transcribing speech and helping people improve their communication skills. The Compton P-ESL Program is now one of the world’s foremost accent modification methods, and is offered exclusively by trained and certified speech pathologists.
